Tripe for Dogs: What It Is and How to Feed It

By Raw Dogs Dorset ·

Dog tucking into a bowl of raw food

Tripe is the stomach lining of grazing animals, and most dogs love it. It's one of the most popular things we sell, either on its own as a mince or mixed with other meats. The key thing to know is that plain tripe isn't a complete meal by itself, so it works best as part of a varied raw diet.

Fair warning: it smells. Strongly. Your dog will think that's a feature, not a bug.

What is tripe?

Tripe is the stomach of animals such as cattle and sheep. The tripe you see at a butcher's for people is usually cleaned and bleached, which is why it looks pale. Tripe sold for dogs is prepared raw and isn't bleached, so it keeps its natural colour and its very natural smell.

Why do owners feed tripe?

  • Dogs go mad for it. The strong smell makes it one of the most tempting foods we sell, and owners often tell us it's what finally wins over a fussy eater.
  • It adds variety. Rotating proteins is a simple way to keep a raw diet interesting, and tripe pairs well with beef, lamb, turkey and fish.
  • It's soft and easy to eat. Plain tripe mince has no bone, so it suits dogs who are new to raw or older dogs who prefer softer food.

We won't make health claims about any single food. If your dog has a medical condition or a sensitive stomach, check with your vet before changing their diet.

Is tripe a complete meal?

Plain tripe on its own is not. Our Tripe Mince and 1kg Free Flow Tripe Mince are 100% tripe with no bone, so they need other foods alongside them to make up a balanced diet.

If you'd rather not do the balancing yourself, choose a Complete labelled recipe that already includes tripe with meat, bone and offal. Our guide to Complete versus Complementary raw food explains the difference.

How to feed tripe

  • New to raw? Start with a Complete labelled tripe recipe such as Lamb & Tripe, so the meal is already balanced.
  • Already raw feeding? Use plain tripe or tripe mixes as one part of a rotation, alongside complete meals or your own balanced menu.
  • As a topper. A spoonful of Free Flow Tripe on top of their usual dinner is an easy way to tempt a fussy dog. Count it as part of their daily amount.
  • Introduce it gradually. Like any new food, mix a little in over about a week. Our transition guide explains how.

To work out how much your dog needs each day, build their personalised raw plan. It sets a starting amount from their weight, age and activity.

Handling and storage

Keep tripe frozen until needed, defrost it in the fridge in its packaging, and wash hands, bowls and surfaces afterwards, as you would with any raw meat. A lidded container in the fridge helps keep the smell where it belongs. See our raw food safety guide for more.

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs eat raw tripe every day?

Tripe can be fed regularly as part of a balanced diet. Plain tripe isn't complete on its own, so either choose a Complete labelled tripe recipe or make sure the rest of the diet provides what tripe doesn't.

Is tripe good for puppies?

Puppies have specific nutritional needs while they grow. Use a Complete labelled food suitable for puppies as the base of their diet, and ask your vet before making big changes. Our puppy and adult raw feeding ratios guide has more detail.

Is tripe chicken free?

Plain Tripe Mince is 100% tripe, and Beef & Tripe, Lamb & Tripe and Salmon & Tripe recipes don't list chicken. Chicken & Tripe obviously does. Always check the current label, and see our chicken free raw food guide if your dog needs to avoid it.

Why does tripe smell so bad?

It's the natural smell of raw stomach lining that hasn't been bleached. Dogs find it irresistible. Keep it sealed in the freezer and fridge, and you'll barely notice it until dinner time.
