Chicken-Free Raw Dog Food: What Are Your Options?

By Raw Dogs Dorset ·

Dog eating a raw beef meal

If you're looking for chicken-free raw dog food, start by checking the full ingredients of each recipe—not just the flavour on the front. Beef and lamb single-protein recipes can be useful choices for owners who simply want to avoid chicken. But chicken-free does not mean hypoallergenic, and a product with no chicken listed is not automatically suitable for a dog with a diagnosed allergy or a veterinary elimination diet.

Why do dog owners look for chicken-free raw food?

Some dogs are offered a chicken-free menu for variety or because their owner prefers a different protein. Others have recurring itchy skin, ear problems, vomiting or diarrhoea, and their owner wonders whether chicken is responsible. Those symptoms can have several causes; don't assume chicken is the trigger without veterinary advice.

The UK veterinary charity PDSA explains how food allergies in dogs are assessed. A vet may recommend a strictly controlled food trial, rather than simply switching between commercial meats.

Chicken-free is not the same as poultry-free

Chicken, turkey and duck are different ingredients. A turkey or duck recipe can be chicken-free if its full composition contains no chicken, but that does not make it poultry-free. The product name alone is not enough: combinations, bone, organs, broths and other ingredients can change what is in the food.

If your dog must avoid chicken, check the current product label and complete ingredient list each time you buy. If the restriction is medically important, ask the manufacturer about shared production and handling before you order. We cannot guarantee freedom from traces of chicken merely because a recipe lists another meat.

Which Raw Dogs Dorset products might fit a chicken-free preference?

These are examples from our Southcliffe range whose currently published ingredient descriptions do not list chicken. Always check the current packaging and suitability before feeding, especially if chicken avoidance is medically necessary.

Beef Complete — single-protein recipe

Our Southcliffe Beef Complete 24 × 454g box currently lists beef cuts, bone, heart, liver and spleen. It is described as a single-protein beef option, making it a straightforward starting point for customers choosing to avoid chicken by ingredient.

Lamb Complete — single-protein recipe

Our Southcliffe Lamb Complete 24 × 454g box currently lists lamb cuts, bone, heart, liver and spleen. It is another option to investigate where the owner wants a recipe without chicken on the ingredient list.

Other proteins and mixed recipes

The wider raw dog food shop includes other protein names such as venison, turkey, duck and mixed meat recipes. Some mixed recipes contain chicken even when another meat leads the name. Compare the full label, and don't treat the entire range as chicken-free. For more on venison, read our guide to feeding venison to dogs.

Does 80/10/10 mean the food is nutritionally complete?

No. An 80/10/10 meat, bone and offal ratio does not on its own prove that a food meets every nutritional requirement. Some products use “Complete” in their retail name, but you should check the formal nutritional labelling and whether the manufacturer states that the food is complete for your dog's life stage. Compare the differences in our Complete versus Complementary raw feeding guide.

If you're changing a dog's long-term diet, particularly for a growing dog or one with a medical condition, discuss nutritional suitability with your vet or a suitably qualified veterinary nutrition professional.

Can you build a mixed box without chicken?

When ordering our Southcliffe mixed box, simply select or write “No chicken” in the food preferences or exclusions section. We'll use that instruction when putting your box together, so there is no need to call or email us to repeat it. As with any packed order, mistakes can occasionally happen; check the contents when they arrive.

Read each included flavour's ingredient list when the order is confirmed. Avoid assuming that a chicken-free selection also avoids turkey, duck or every poultry-derived ingredient.

What if you suspect a chicken allergy?

Ask your vet to assess the symptoms before self-diagnosing a food allergy. PDSA explains that vets may recommend a controlled elimination trial lasting around 6–12 weeks. During a prescribed trial, extra treats, chews and flavoured products can interfere with the result; follow the vet's exact instructions.

A regular chicken-free commercial raw box is not a substitute for a prescribed diagnostic diet. For guidance, consult PDSA's food allergy information.

Planning your next order

Once you've checked ingredient suitability, use our personalised Raw Plan to explore food options and estimate how much to order. The planner is an estimate, not a veterinary prescription. See delivery and collection options for Dorset deliveries, nationwide service and shop collection.

Frequently asked questions

Is beef raw dog food chicken-free?

Some beef recipes list only beef ingredients, but others contain chicken too. Check the precise recipe and current label. Our Beef Complete product page currently lists beef cuts, bone and offal without chicken.

Can a dog that avoids chicken eat turkey or duck?

Possibly, but it depends on why chicken is being avoided. They are different proteins, and a chicken-free recipe is not automatically poultry-free or suitable for a dog with a diagnosed allergy. Ask your vet if your dog's restriction is medical.

Are single-protein raw foods safe for elimination diets?

Do not use a retail single-protein claim as a guarantee of suitability for a diagnostic elimination trial. Your vet should choose and supervise the diet and confirm whether cross-contact controls are sufficient.

Can I request no chicken in a mixed box?

Yes. Add “No chicken” to your food preferences or exclusions when placing your order and we'll follow that instruction when packing your mixed box. You don't need to contact us separately. If your dog has a medically diagnosed allergy, remember that excluding chicken ingredients is not a guarantee against traces from shared handling or production.
